• This is an independent study guide written by Latest Exam Packs. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or
issued by the Department of Employment and Labour (DEL), HWSETA, the QCTO, the Resuscitation Council of
Southern Africa (RCSA) or any training provider.
• It is not medical advice and does not replace accredited first aid training with hands-on practice and
assessment. You need a valid certificate from an approved provider to act as a workplace first aider.
• The questions are our own, written to match the topics of Level 1 courses. They are not copied from any
provider's test or manual and are not the questions you will get.
• Follow your trainer, your workplace procedures and the instructions of emergency services where they
differ from this guide.
• Guidelines change. This edition reflects the 2025 resuscitation guidelines and the 2024 first aid guidelines,
checked in October 2026.
• In an emergency, call 112 (any phone) or 10177.
How we checked the answers
Every clinical answer was checked against the 2025 AHA/ILCOR resuscitation guidelines (as adopted by
the Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa), RCSA Policy #30 and its 2025 choking algorithm, and the
2024 AHA/Red Cross first aid guidelines. Legal answers were checked against General Safety Regulation 3
under the OHS Act. Where SA providers commonly teach something different, the notes say so and the
item is listed in 'Things to confirm'.

, PART 1
How the Level 1 course and assessment work
This pack prepares you for the theory test and the practical assessment of a Level 1 first aid course in
South Africa. It covers both routes: the older unit standard 119567 'Perform basic life support and first
aid procedures' (NQF 1) and the newer QCTO skills programme SP-230801 Basic Emergency First Aid
Responder. The first aid skills are the same.
How the assessment usually works
Part What happens How to prepare
Formative work Short in-class activities and workbook questions Read the notes for each topic before
during the course. your course.
Theory test Written test set by your training provider: mostly Do every topic quiz, then the 40-
multiple-choice, true/false and short answers. A question mock in Part 3.
common pass mark is 80%.

check. Every critical step must be done (often
marked 100%).
How to use this pack
Read the study notes, then the exam traps box for each topic.
Do the practice questions without looking. Mark yourself with answers explained: each answer has
the reasoning in steps and a source.
Watch the free videos. Some are from the UK or USA; where they differ from SA practice (for
example emergency numbers), follow this pack and your trainer.
When you score 80%+ on every topic, sit the mock exam (45 minutes).
Before your practical, read the practical checklists and practise them out loud.
Which guidelines this pack teaches
This edition teaches the 2025 resuscitation guidelines (AHA/ILCOR 2025, adopted by the Resuscitation
Council of Southern Africa) and the 2024 AHA/Red Cross first aid guidelines. Some older manuals,
posters and videos still show older methods. Where that matters, look for the 'Older manuals may say'
notes. If your trainer marks to an older manual, ask which version your test uses.
