, Question 1
1.1 Describe the characteristics of Kingdom Protista, Plantae, Fungi and
Animalia.
Characteristics of Kingdom Protista:
Eukaryotic organisms that have cells with nuclei but they do not part of animals,
plants or fungi.
They can be unicellular or multicellular organisms.
They can reproduce sexually or asexually. (Autotrophic or heterotrophic)
They do not form a natural group or colony
Protista are a diverse group, examples of protista include Amoebas, Diatoms,
Seeweeds and disease causing organisms like Plasmodium.

Characteristics of Kingdom Plantae:
Plants that are autotrophic, multicellular, terrestrial eukaryotes.
They get their energy through the process of photosynthesis.

Characteristics of Kingdom Fungi:
Fungi are closer related to animals than to plants.
They are heterotrophic, organisms.
Fungi can be unicellular (yeast) or multicellular (mushrooms).
Fungi are important in the ecosystem as they decompose dead organic matter.
Some fungi are pathogenic, disease causing organisms like candida (organism
that causes thrush in humans) or athletes foot.

Characteristics of Kingdom Animalia:
Animals are multicellular organisms.
They are heterotrophic eukaryotes.
They eat other organisms to get energy and nutrients.
Mainly reproduce sexually and are in the diploid stage for most of life.
They are gametes at the haploid stage of life (beginning of their life cycle)
Kingdom Animalia is further divided into subgroups: Sponges, Cnidarians,
Roundworms, Flatworms, Arthropods, Mollusks, Annelids, Echinoderms and
Chordates.
