ASSIGNMENT 5 – PORTFOLIO 2026

PORTFOLIO TASK 1: REFLECTIVE NARRATIVE ON TEACHING PRACTICE
EXPERIENCE

[20 Marks]

1. Reflective Narrative

(a) Description of the school and teaching context

My teaching practice was conducted at a public secondary school in South Africa that
serves learners from the surrounding community. The school provides education to
learners in the Further Education and Training (FET) phase and has a diverse teaching
and learning environment. During my teaching practice, I was mainly involved in
teaching Grade 11 Tourism, although I also had opportunities to observe lessons and
interact with learners from other grades. The Tourism classroom provided a useful
environment in which to connect theoretical concepts with practical examples from the
tourism industry.

The school had ordinary classroom facilities, including desks, chairs, textbooks and a
chalkboard or whiteboard. Although technological resources were limited, this did not
prevent effective teaching. I learned to make use of available resources such as
textbooks, maps, pictures, newspaper articles, worksheets and locally relevant
examples. The experience showed me that effective teaching depends not only on
sophisticated technology but also on proper planning, creativity and the ability to use
resources meaningfully.

(b) Diversity of learners
