1.1 How higher education students use artificial intelligence (draft)
Key to editing and revision: struck-through text has been deleted; blue text has been added
or rewritten; black text without a line through it was kept unchanged.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is when computers do things that people usually dorefers to com-
puter systems designed to perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as
understanding language, recognising patterns and solving problems (Russell and Norvig, 2021).

ported, before drawing the main ideas together in a conclusion.
AI is good for students in many ways.AI offers higher education students several clear bene-
fits. First, AI tools help students a lotprovide personalised support, because students can ask
questions at any hour and get answersreceive explanations adjusted to their level, which is
goodvaluable for distance learners at institutions such as the University of South Africa who
often study without direct contact with lecturers(Kasneci et al., 2023). Second, AI helps with
Englishassists with language and writing development. AFor example, a student who speaks
English as an additional language can use AI to check grammar and learn new words, under-
stand difficult vocabulary and see how an academic paragraph is organised. Third, AI is quick
and makessaves time by summarising long readings, generating study plans and notesand help-
ing students organise research, which givesallows more time for thinkingcritical thinking. So AI
makes studying easier. As the poem notes, AI “answers the questions that we ask”, and when
