SECTION 1: QUIZ REFLECTION
Reflection on Assignments 01 and 02
The first two assignments in HSY1512 were quiz assignments that helped me to
develop a better understanding of the historical topics covered in the module.
Completing the quizzes required me to read the study material carefully and identify the
important historical information instead of relying only on general knowledge. One of the
most important things I learnt was that historical events should be understood within
their particular social, political and economic contexts. The quizzes also helped me to
understand that South African history was shaped by interactions between different
groups, including indigenous communities, European settlers and enslaved people. I
also learnt that historical developments cannot always be explained by looking at one
cause because different factors often influenced an event at the same time. The quizzes
improved my ability to distinguish between important facts and less relevant information
and encouraged me to go back to the study material when I was uncertain about an
answer. Another important lesson was the need to understand historical concepts rather
than simply memorising dates and names. I intend to use these skills in future
assignments by reading the questions carefully, identifying the main issue being asked
about and then selecting evidence that directly supports my argument. I will also make
greater use of different sources and compare their information before reaching a
conclusion. Overall, Assignments 01 and 02 prepared me to approach longer written
assignments more critically and systematically.
