QUESTION 1

1.1 Diversity in the classroom

Diversity in the classroom refers to the differences among learners that influence their
identities, experiences, abilities, needs, and participation in the teaching and learning
process. It recognises that learners do not enter the classroom with identical backgrounds
or equal opportunities to learn. Instead, they differ in their social circumstances, cultural
identities, home languages, prior knowledge, interests, learning preferences, physical
abilities, and intellectual development. In South Africa, classroom diversity is particularly
significant because learners come from different cultural and linguistic communities and
experience unequal socioeconomic conditions shaped by the country's historical inequalities.
Diversity also includes differences in gender, religion, family structures, emotional
development, disability, and the pace at which learners acquire knowledge. These
dimensions frequently overlap, meaning that a learner may experience several advantages
or disadvantages simultaneously. The Department of Education (2001) emphasises that
inclusive education must recognise and respond to the diverse needs of all learners rather
than expecting every learner to adapt to a uniform education system.

Teachers can support diverse learners by creating an inclusive classroom in which
differences are respected and every learner has meaningful opportunities to participate and
succeed. For example, a teacher working in a multilingual classroom can explain difficult
concepts in English while using familiar examples from learners' home languages and
cultural experiences to strengthen understanding. Learners with visual impairments can
receive enlarged print, accessible digital materials, or verbal descriptions of diagrams, while
learners who struggle with reading can benefit from guided reading, additional explanations,
and appropriately scaffolded activities. Teachers can also differentiate instruction by
presenting information through written texts, illustrations, demonstrations, discussions, and
