1.2 Extrinsic
Extrinsic motivation means that a person is motivated by something external. Both extrinsic and
intrinsic motivation exist in most classrooms, most classroom practices promote mainly
extrinsic motivation. In extrinsic motivation rewards like praise, fame or money are used as
motivation for specific activities.
Examples

 Competing in sport for trophies.
 Doing tasks to avoid judgment.
 Helping other for praise from friends and family.

Intrinsic
Intrinsic motivation means that a person works because of an inner desire to be successful at a
certain task. This means that much more attention should be given to supporting learners to
develop their own intrinsic motivation to be successful in school activities.
