Question 1

You are teaching Intermediate FAL English to a group of learners in a South African
urban school. You have access to various technologies in your classroom.

In an essay of 600 words and NO MORE, discuss:

• How you would teach “The Journey of Justice” in a multimodal way.
In this section of your essay, select three things (events, ideas, or settings) in the
story and discuss which multimodal strategies you would use to teach your class
about them, i.e., explain why you would use that specific strategy to teach that
specific aspect of the story.
• To conclude, briefly give your own opinion on multimodal teaching in South Africa.
Do you believe multimodality is a good teaching strategy in this country, or do you
think a South African teacher might have challenges with multimodal teaching?
Give reasons for your opinion.

You will be assessed on content (70), language (20), and structure (10 marks).

Teaching Intermediate FAL English to a group of learners in a South African
urban school.

I would teach The Journey of Justice in a multimodal way because learners understand
stories in different ways. Some learners learn better by reading, while others learn
better by listening, watching, drawing, acting or using technology. Multimodal teaching
uses different methods to make learning more interesting and easier to understand.
This is useful for FAL learners because English may not be their home language.
