The answers below follow the assessment numbering and apply developmental theories
to the evidence in the case study. The discussion uses Piaget’s cognitive-development
theory, Kohlberg’s moral-development theory, Erikson’s psychosocial theory, and
relevant principles of African-centred early childhood education.
SECTION A: Lwazi and School Readiness [60]
Question 1: Developmental Domain Analysis [48]
Question 1.1: Physical Development [8]
(a) Definition (2 marks)
Physical development refers to changes in a child’s body, muscles, bones, coordination,
balance, movement and fine-motor abilities. It includes gross-motor skills, such as
running and jumping, and fine-motor skills, such as holding a pencil, cutting with
scissors and fastening buttons (Berk, 2018).
(b) Piaget and Kohlberg (2 marks)
Piaget’s theory primarily explains cognitive development rather than physical
development. Lwazi is in the preoperational stage, approximately two to seven years,
during which children learn through movement, play, imitation and exploration. His
physical activities support this learning. Kohlberg’s theory concerns moral reasoning
and is not directly applicable to physical development.
(c) Evidence 1 and exhibit (2 marks)
Evidence: Lwazi can run, jump with both feet and hop several times on one foot.
