QUESTION 1

1.1 Indicate with a motivation, the suitability of group work as a method to assist you
with this task. (2)

Group work is suitable because the men in Taung share a common problem, namely
misconceptions and fears about Lenacapavir. It allows the social worker to provide
information while enabling members to learn from and support one another. Group
interaction can help members challenge misconceptions and develop more positive
attitudes towards HIV prevention (Toseland & Rivas, 2017).

1.2 Indicate with a motivation, a suitable type of group to fulfil your task. (3)

An educational and supportive group would be suitable. The group would provide men with
accurate information about HIV, PrEP and Lenacapavir while also giving them an
opportunity to discuss their fears and experiences. The supportive nature of the group
would allow members to encourage one another and realise that they are not alone in
having concerns about healthcare. Educational groups are appropriate when members
need knowledge and skills to address a particular problem (Toseland & Rivas, 2017).

1.3 How would you maintain confidentiality in this group? (3)

Confidentiality would be maintained by establishing confidentiality as a group rule during
the first session. Members would agree not to discuss other members' personal information,
HIV status or contributions outside the group. The group would also meet in a private
setting, and records containing personal information would be securely stored. Members

, would be informed that confidentiality is a shared responsibility and that there are certain
professional and legal limitations to confidentiality (SACSSP, 2018).

1.4 Explain with a practical example how you would build group culture. (5)

I would build group culture by involving members in developing rules and expectations for
respectful participation. These could include listening to others, allowing everyone an
opportunity to speak, respecting different opinions, avoiding judgement and maintaining
confidentiality.

For example, if a member says that he believes Lenacapavir causes sexual weakness and
another member laughs at him, I would stop the ridicule and remind the group that
members must feel safe to express their concerns. I would ask the group where this
information came from and then facilitate a respectful discussion about whether it is
supported by reliable evidence. In this way, the group would gradually develop a culture
based on respect, trust, openness and learning rather than judgement (Toseland & Rivas,
2017).

1.5 Explain the benefits of emotional bonds in group work and indicate how you will
enhance them in this group. (5)

Emotional bonds help members develop trust, belonging, support and group cohesion.
When members feel accepted by others, they are more likely to participate, discuss their
fears and accept information from the group. Emotional bonds can also reduce feelings of
isolation because members discover that others have similar concerns.

I would enhance these bonds through small-group activities, active listening, empathy and
respectful communication. For example, members could work in pairs to discuss why men
sometimes avoid healthcare services and then share common concerns with the larger
group. I would encourage members to support one another and acknowledge positive
contributions. These activities would help members develop trust and a sense of belonging
(Toseland & Rivas, 2017).
