ASSIGNMENT 5 SEMESTER 2
(PORTFOLIO) 2026
DUE 28 OCTOBER 2026
Question 1: Module Experience Reflection
Before commencing AFL1501, my understanding of language was largely functional, viewing it
primarily as a neutral tool for communication and information transfer. My perception of my own
identity was similarly straightforward, and I had not deeply considered the intricate connections
between language, culture, and community. While I acknowledged the existence of different
languages and cultures, I did not fully appreciate how language actively constructs and mediates
our social realities and personal identities.

My learning journey in AFL1501 has fundamentally transformed this perspective. The module
illuminated how language is not merely a system of words but a powerful, dynamic force that
shapes our worldview, as suggested by the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis (Whorf 1956). I learned that
identity is not a static trait but a fluid and multifaceted construct, constantly negotiated through
linguistic interactions. The concept of linguistic relativity, for instance, helped me understand that
my own first language subtly influences how I categorize and interpret my experiences.

What stood out as most meaningful was the exploration of language in the South African context.
The module’s emphasis on multilingualism and the concept of ubuntu—"I am because we are"
(Mbiti 1969)—reframed my understanding of community. I now see that language is a communal
asset, a bridge that fosters social cohesion and mutual recognition. It is through sharing language
that we affirm our shared humanity and build inclusive communities. This journey has instilled in
me a profound appreciation for linguistic diversity and a deeper awareness of the ethical
responsibility inherent in how I use language to include or exclude others. My identity is now
clearer to me as a product of my linguistic heritage and my ongoing participation in a diverse
linguistic community.
