QUESTION 1:

An Examination of Transport Marketing Strategies Adopted by South African Commercial
Transport Companies and the Challenges Encountered in Their Implementation

Introduction

Transport plays an important role in the South African economy because it allows people and
goods to move between residential areas, businesses, cities and different regions.
Commercial transport companies operate in a competitive environment where customers
expect services that are affordable, safe, reliable and convenient. The sector includes
passenger transport operators, bus companies, rail services, freight companies, logistics
businesses and other transport service providers. Because customers have different needs,
transport companies need to develop marketing strategies that communicate the value of their
services while also responding to changes in customer behaviour and technology.

Marketing in the transport industry goes beyond simply advertising a service. It involves
understanding customers, setting appropriate prices, communicating with passengers,
developing a strong brand and improving the quality of the service provided. Technology has
also changed how transport companies interact with their customers. Social media, mobile
applications, electronic ticketing, online booking systems and real-time passenger
information have created new ways for companies to promote their services and
communicate with customers. However, transport companies face several challenges when
implementing these strategies, including financial pressure, infrastructure problems,
competition, technological skills shortages and unreliable service delivery (Walters & Pisa,
2023).

1. Digital and Social Media Marketing

, Digital marketing has become an important strategy for transport companies because
customers increasingly use the internet and mobile devices to obtain information. Transport
companies can use websites and social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X and
WhatsApp to advertise their services, communicate schedules, announce changes and
respond to customer enquiries. Social media also provides companies with an opportunity to
communicate with large numbers of customers without relying entirely on traditional
advertising methods.

For example, a bus company can advertise special fares, new routes or holiday services
through its social media pages. A logistics company can use its website and social media
presence to communicate information about its delivery services and areas of operation.
WhatsApp can also be used to respond to customer questions and provide updates. The use
of social media can therefore make communication between transport providers and
customers faster and more direct. Research into South African minibus taxi services has
identified social media platforms such as Facebook and WhatsApp as useful tools for
communication and information sharing between operators and passengers (National
Research Foundation, 2025).

Another benefit of digital marketing is that it can help companies understand customer
responses. Comments, messages, reviews and online interactions can provide information
about customer expectations and complaints. Transport companies can use this information
to identify areas where services need improvement. However, companies need to monitor
their online platforms regularly because unanswered complaints or inaccurate information
can negatively affect their reputation.

2. Customer-Oriented Marketing

Customer-oriented marketing focuses on understanding what customers expect from a
transport service and attempting to meet those expectations. In the transport industry,
customers are usually concerned with issues such as affordability, safety, reliability,
convenience, comfort and travel time. A company that understands these needs can develop
marketing messages and services that are more relevant to its target market.
