Question 1 [50 Marks]

1.1 Define play-based pedagogy and explain its importance in supporting
learning and development in a Grade R classroom. (6)

Play-based pedagogy is an intentional, research-aligned approach to early childhood
education in which play serves as the primary context and vehicle for learning. It
encompasses a continuum ranging from free (child-directed) play to guided play (adult-
supported with clear learning goals) and structured playful games. Children actively
explore, experiment, problem-solve, and make meaning through interactions with
people, objects, and representations, while teachers make purposeful decisions about
the environment, materials, and interactions to maximise learning outcomes (NAEYC,
2022; Zosh et al., 2018).

In a Grade R classroom this pedagogy is of fundamental importance. Children aged 5–6
learn most effectively through active, joyful, meaningful, iterative and socially
interactive experiences. High-quality play-based learning supports cognitive
development (problem-solving, executive function, early literacy and numeracy
foundations), social-emotional competence (self-regulation, cooperation, empathy),
language growth, and physical skills. Research demonstrates that guided play produces
equivalent or superior academic outcomes to purely didactic instruction while
simultaneously fostering motivation, creativity and positive learning dispositions
essential for the transition to formal schooling (Skene et al., 2022; Lunga et al., 2022).

1.2 Describe two play-based activities that a Grade R teacher can use to develop
early numeracy skills. Explain how each activity promotes mathematical learning.
