Exploring School Leaders’ Experiences of Leading Change in South African Schools
1. Introduction to the Research Methodology
The methodology explains how the study will investigate school leaders’ experiences of
leading change in South African schools. It provides a clear plan for collecting and
analysing information in a systematic and ethical manner. A suitable research
methodology is important because it helps the researcher answer the research
questions and produce findings that are supported by evidence (Creswell & Creswell,
2018). This study focuses on the experiences of school leaders, including the challenges
they face when introducing and managing changes within their schools. Since
leadership experiences involve personal views, perceptions and interpretations, a
qualitative research approach will be used. Qualitative research allows participants to
explain their experiences in their own words and provides an opportunity to explore
issues in greater depth (Creswell & Poth, 2018). Semi-structured interviews will be
used to collect information from selected school leaders. The information will then be
analysed using thematic analysis to identify common patterns and themes. This
methodology will discuss the research approach and paradigm, data collection methods,
participant selection, data analysis, research quality and ethical considerations.

researcher seeks to understand how school leaders experience the process of leading
