What is the Pericardium?
The pericardium is a thin sac that surrounds the heart.
It protects and lubricates your heart and fixes it in place in the chest.
Problems can occur when the pericardium becomes inflamed or fills
with fluid. The swelling can damage your heart and affect its
function.
Functions
•It protects your heart from any infections that might spread from
nearby organs like the lungs.
•It keeps heart fixed in place within the chest cavity.
•It prevents heart over-stretching and overfilling with blood.
•It lubricates heart to prevent friction with other tissues as it beats.
Layers
•Fibrous pericardium is the outer layer. Its made from thick
connective tissue and is attached to your diaphragm. It holds your
heart in place in the chest cavity and protects from infections.
•Serous pericardium is the inner layer. It’s further divided into two
more layers: the visceral and parietal layers. Between these two
layers is the pericardial cavity which helps to lubricate the heart
