Introduction

Supply chain management has become a strategic source of competitiveness because
organisations must simultaneously achieve customer responsiveness, cost efficiency,
resilience and sustainability. The three questions illustrate these requirements from
different perspectives: KFC South Africa demonstrates how sourcing, sustainability and
transportation decisions influence resilience; JT Manufacturers demonstrates how Fourth
Industrial Revolution technologies can improve visibility and decision-making; and the
U.S. tariff scenario demonstrates how external shocks can rapidly disrupt international
supply networks. Across all three questions, the central argument is that supply chain
performance improves when organisations align supply chain design, technology, risk
management and sustainability with their strategic objectives.

QUESTION 1: KFC SOUTH AFRICA – RESILIENCE THROUGH SUPPLY CHAIN
PROCESSES

1.1 Supplier localisation

a) Strategic benefits of localisation and their impact on the KFC South Africa supply
chain

Reduced lead time and improved responsiveness.

Localisation places important suppliers geographically closer to KFC’s distribution
network. This can shorten replenishment lead times and make the supply chain more
responsive to changes in demand. This is particularly important for KFC because poultry
is a highly perishable product requiring strict quality and temperature control. Sourcing
poultry from South African producers therefore supports faster replenishment and helps
KFC maintain freshness while responding to restaurant demand more rapidly (UNISA,
2024). The impact is greater supply chain responsiveness and reduced dependence on
long international replenishment cycles.

Lower exposure to international supply chain uncertainty.

Local sourcing reduces KFC’s exposure to international border procedures, import
administration, overseas transport disruptions and exchange-rate fluctuations. This
strengthens supply continuity and makes procurement conditions more predictable. In
KFC’s case, domestic poultry sourcing supports its ability to maintain a consistent supply
of a strategically important input while protecting its “fresh and wholesome” value
proposition. However, the benefit is strongest when KFC combines localisation with
supplier monitoring and resilience measures, rather than treating local sourcing as a
complete substitute for risk management.

b) Potential risks of localisation and their impact on the KFC South Africa supply
chain

Concentration risk from dependence on domestic supply.

Localisation can create geographic concentration because disruption within South Africa
may affect many suppliers simultaneously. Agricultural disease, severe weather, labour
disruption or infrastructure failures can therefore create a system-wide shortage. The
2023 avian influenza outbreak illustrates this vulnerability: shortages affected the supply
of poultry and contributed to KFC store closures in Lesotho. The impact is potentially
severe because a disruption to a single domestic supply environment can produce stock-
outs, lost sales and reduced customer service (UNISA, 2024).

Limited supplier capacity and higher supplier-management requirements.

A localisation strategy can require the focal company to develop suppliers so that smaller
local businesses can consistently meet demanding cost, quality, food-safety and delivery
requirements. KFC’s supplier development programmes and regular performance
reviews demonstrate that localisation requires active supplier governance rather than
simply selecting a nearby supplier. The impact is additional monitoring, auditing and
supplier-development effort; if suppliers do not achieve the required performance, KFC
could face quality failures, inconsistent deliveries or higher procurement costs.
