In addition to using the prescribed book as your primary source of theory, you are also required to identify and download a minimum of four relevant journal articles from the Unisa Library and other databases, incorporate them into your answers for each question and reference them properly. Question 1 – Maximum of 1 500 words [25] Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) have become a significant phenomenon of global economy. Through FDI many firms see the world as an open market, which makes their presence in the world economy possible and visible. The previous role in the world economy through FDI were the UK, France, Germany, Netherlands and Japan. China, however, is changing the status quo, with their FDI having from $12 billion in 2005 to $133 billion in 2020. Much of such investments were in less developed such as the US, with investment of about $46 billion and $30 billion in 2016 and 2019 in the US alone. China’s FDI in the US declined to $5 billion after an ongoing trade conflict. Required: Critically discuss the benefits and the de-benefits of China’s investment in Africa. Question 2 – Maximum of 1 200 words [20] The World Trade Organization (WTO) expects all member states to notify them of their regional membership. The WTO regulates regional economic integrations through legal frameworks such as Article XX1V of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade 1994 and the Enabling. These two rules allow countries to form preferential free trade agreements, free trade areas and customs union such as regional blocs in Africa, provided they complement the global trading system than harming outside nations. Regional economic integrations are meant to promote free trade among member states and are thus far said to be advantageous than the WTO, as they make it easier for countries to trade among each other through the removal of trade barriers. Required: Critically evaluate the drawbacks of the regional economic integration concept. Question 3 – Maximum of 1 200 words [20] Africa is said to have experimented with many regional blocs for almost half a century. There are currently eight trading blocs in the continent recognised by the African Union (AU). It includes the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Economic Community of East African Countries (ECOWAS), Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA), East African Community (EAC), Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD), and Arab Magheb Union (AMU). In Africa, countries often belong to more than one regional economic integration. There are 54 countries on? in the continent who have signed as members of the African Continent Free Trade Area. Only the East African Community (EAC) is said to have established a common market and is on their way to establish a monetary union.

China’s investment in Africa, the challenges of regional economic integration, the
