Creating Supportive Learning Environments for Young Children: Early Childhood
Educators’ Experiences and Practices
1. Methodological Orientation
The methodology provides a structured framework for investigating how early childhood
educators create supportive learning environments for young children. Early childhood is an
important developmental period during which children develop foundational cognitive,
language, physical, social and emotional abilities. The environment in which children learn
can influence their participation, interactions, confidence and opportunities for development.
Educators therefore have an important role in creating learning spaces that respond to
children's developmental and individual needs.
The study will use a qualitative methodology to explore the experiences and practices of
early childhood educators in creating supportive learning environments. A qualitative
approach is appropriate because the research seeks to understand educators' experiences,
perceptions and practices within their everyday educational contexts (Creswell & Poth,
2018).
Semi-structured interviews will be used to generate detailed information from selected early
childhood educators. The interviews will explore classroom practices, educator-child
relationships, learning resources, play-based activities, classroom management and
challenges experienced by educators. The collected information will be analysed
thematically to identify patterns and themes within participants' responses (Braun & Clarke,
2021). Research trustworthiness will be addressed through credibility, dependability,
confirmability and transferability. Ethical procedures will be followed to protect participants
and any information relating to young children.
