, 1. Introduction
The development issues facing the world today are reaching a point of
desperation and need to be attended to as soon as possible. This will only be
possible if we, as development actors and humanitarians, work together as an
international entity towards common goals.
It has therefore become necessary to establish exactly what these goals are and
how we will set about in achieving them.
The Millennium Development Goals have been formulated for this exact
reason and are an attempt to target vital issues that are of global importance.
They stress the necessity of developed and developing countries working
together towards the achievement of these goals. The goals are:
Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Achieve universal primary education
Promote gender equality and empower women
Reduce child mortality
Improve maternal health
Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
Ensure environmental sustainability
Develop a global partnership for development
I would therefore like to discuss the importance of two of these Millennium
Development Goals of universal primary education and gender equality and
the problems that are facing the achievement thereof.
