GRL2601 Assignment 3 (Portfolio) MEMO | Due 7 October 2026. All questions fully answered. Scenario: You are a Grade R teacher at Lambani Primary School, a diverse school in a suburban area. Your class consists of 26 learners from various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. The school principal has asked you to present your teaching approach at the next staff meeting, focusing on how you balance play-based learning with formal instruction. You need to prepare a differentiated teaching approach to cater to learner diversity and demonstrate how you will meet the needs of each learner. Activity 1 Demonstrate how you will implement differentiated teaching approaches to cater for learner diversity and their individual needs (20 marks)

 Activity 1

1. Demonstrate how you will implement differentiated teaching approaches to cater for learner
diversity and their individual needs.

In my Grade R classroom at Lambani Primary School, I implement differentiated teaching as a
comprehensive, responsive approach that acknowledges the unique strengths, needs, and
backgrounds of each of my 26 learners. The principal's request to demonstrate how I balance
play-based learning with formal instruction aligns with the understanding that differentiated teaching
is an essential strategy where learning experiences are adjusted to suit both the process students use
to learn and the product expected from them (Tomlinson, 2014). My approach is grounded in
Vygotsky's socio-cultural theory, which positions the teacher's role as significant in students' play
experiences, recognising that learning is co-constructed through intentional interactions (Vygotsky,
1978).

To effectively cater to learner diversity, I begin by conducting systematic observations during
free-play sessions to identify the specific developmental needs, interests, and learning profiles of
each child (Du Toit et al., 2019). This strengths-based perspective allows me to differentiate content,
process, and product based on individual readiness. For learners requiring additional support in
foundational literacy or numeracy, I implement small-group scaffolding where I provide explicit
instruction while the rest of the class engages in purposeful play. Research conducted by Nel,
Kempen and Ruscheinski (2021) confirmed that scaffolding, splitting content into smaller steps,
providing immediate feedback, and using practical, hands-on activities are effective differentiated
practices. By providing direct, targeted intervention, I ensure that formal instruction is not a rigid,
one-size-fits-all lecture but a responsive strategy addressing specific gaps in knowledge. Conversely,
for learners demonstrating advanced readiness, I offer extension activities that challenge their critical
thinking and problem-solving skills, ensuring they remain engaged and motivated (Gregory &
Chapman, 2013).

The physical environment of the classroom plays a crucial role in supporting differentiated
instruction through play-based and inquiry learning. I organise the classroom into clearly demarcated
interest-based learning stations that reflect the diverse cultural backgrounds of my learners, such as a
fantasy play area, a reading corner with multilingual books, and a mathematics area with
manipulatives (Excell & Linington, 2015). This approach allows me to integrate formal concepts into
play-based activities that feel natural and meaningful to the children. For instance, during
block-building activities, I differentiate by asking one group to sort by colour while challenging
another group to create complex patterns, thereby meeting different cognitive needs within the same
play context. The use of culturally relevant materials further ensures that each learner sees their own
identity reflected in the curriculum, which is essential for fostering engagement and belonging in a
diverse suburban school setting (Department of Basic Education, 2011). Furthermore, I utilise
flexible grouping strategies, alternating between whole-class instruction, small-group work, and
individualised tasks, so that each learner receives the appropriate level of challenge and support at
different times of the day (Heacox, 2012). By continuously assessing learners through observation
checklists, work samples, and anecdotal records, I am able to adjust my teaching in real-time,
ensuring that the balance between play and formal instruction remains dynamic and responsive to the
evolving needs of each child in my class.
