QUESTION 1

Sustainable agricultural practices and societal well-being

Sustainable agriculture plays an important role in improving the well-being of rural
communities because it focuses on producing food while protecting important natural
resources such as soil, water and biodiversity. In South Africa, many rural households
depend on agriculture as a source of food, income and employment. When agricultural
production is weak or affected by environmental problems, these households can
experience greater levels of poverty and food insecurity. Sustainable practices such as crop
rotation, mulching, conservation agriculture, efficient water management and the use of
drought-resistant crops can assist farmers in maintaining production during difficult
weather conditions. Research involving smallholder maize farmers indicates that climate-
smart agricultural practices can contribute to improved productivity as well as better
household food and nutrition security compared with farming systems that do not use
these practices (Adeagbo et al., 2024).

These approaches are also important for maintaining the long-term sustainability of rural
communities. For example, protecting the soil can reduce erosion and improve its ability to
retain moisture, while efficient water-use practices can help farmers cope with periods of
limited rainfall. This is particularly relevant in South Africa, where drought and changing
rainfall patterns can have serious consequences for agricultural production. The drought
experienced during the 2023–2024 period demonstrated the vulnerability of farmers to
changing climatic conditions, with summer grain and oilseed production expected to decline
significantly during that season (Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural
Development, 2024). Sustainable agriculture therefore has a practical value for rural
