, QUESTION 1:
Sustainable Agricultural Practices and Societal Well-being
Sustainable agriculture plays an important role in improving the well-being of rural
communities because it allows farmers to produce food while protecting the natural
resources needed for future farming. These resources include soil, water and
biodiversity. In South Africa, many rural households depend on agriculture as a source
of food, income and employment. When agricultural production is affected, households
can therefore experience greater levels of poverty and food insecurity. Sustainable
practices such as crop rotation, mulching, conservation agriculture, efficient water
management and the use of drought-resistant crops can assist farmers in maintaining
production under difficult environmental conditions. Research on smallholder maize
farmers indicates that climate-smart agricultural practices can improve productivity as
well as household food and nutrition security compared with farms that do not apply
these methods (Adeagbo et al., 2024).
Sustainable agricultural methods can also help rural communities remain productive
over the long term. Practices that protect the soil can reduce erosion and improve the
ability of the land to retain moisture. This is particularly important in areas where rainfall
is unreliable or where droughts are becoming more frequent. The drought experienced
during the 2023–2024 agricultural season demonstrated the effect that changing rainfall
patterns can have on agricultural production and farmers’ incomes. During this period,
national summer grain and oilseed production was expected to decline significantly
(Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, 2024). Sustainable
agriculture is therefore important to rural families because it helps them meet their
current food requirements while protecting the land and resources that future
generations will need.
Sustainable agriculture is closely connected to Sustainable Development Goal 2
(SDG 2), which focuses on ending hunger, improving nutrition and promoting
sustainable food production. One of the important areas under SDG 2 is target 2.4,
which promotes sustainable food production systems and resilient agricultural practices.
