Teachers are facing the challenge of a large number of learners in a class. As a
school leader, what would you do with a large class size in your school?
As a school leader, I would first find out why the classes are so large. I would look at the
number of learners in each class and the number of teachers available. I would then
speak to the School Management Team (SMT) and teachers about the problem. We
would work together to find ways to make teaching easier.
One thing I would do is divide learners into smaller groups during activities. Learners
can work in groups while the teacher moves around the class and helps those who need
support. I would encourage teachers to use group work, pair work and peer support.
This can help learners learn from one another.
The Department of Basic Education (2019) explains that teachers should use different
teaching methods to support learners with different needs. Therefore, I would
encourage teachers to plan activities that allow all learners to take part, even when the
class is large.
I would also ask teachers to make good use of the available classroom space. Desks can
be arranged so that learners can work together without making the classroom too
crowded. I would make sure that teaching materials are shared fairly between classes.
As a school leader, I would also ask the district office for help when the number of
learners is too high. I would provide the district with the school enrolment numbers and
explain the need for more teachers or classrooms.
Lastly, I would support teachers by having regular meetings where they can share
problems and good ideas. Naidoo and Reddy (2021) explain that school leaders have an
important role in supporting teachers and improving teaching and learning. My aim
would be to make sure that large classes do not stop learners from receiving good
education.
