Step 2: Write a comment about your footprint
Part A: A Personal Reckoning with Overshoot
Completing the ecological footprint calculator has been a sobering exercise that has brought the
abstract concept of sustainability into sharp, personal focus. My personal Earth Overshoot Day falls
on 19 February, and if everyone lived as I do, we would need 7.3 Earths to sustain our collective
lifestyle. This is not merely a statistic; it is a stark and unsettling measure of my personal demand on
the planet's resources. The "Sustainability?" section of the assessment highlights the profound
inequity in global resource consumption, where the lifestyle of a minority, which I am clearly part of,
is entirely incompatible with the planet's biocapacity (Global Footprint Network, 2020). I feel a deep
sense of discomfort and a personal sense of accountability. To know that my individual choices
contribute to a demand that requires over seven planets to sustain is a confronting realisation that
challenges my self-perception as a responsible global citizen. The disconnect between my daily
actions and their cumulative environmental cost is now impossible to ignore.
