Language Identity and the Linguistic Environment in South Africa

Introduction

Conservation of the self means maintaining who we are, how we think, and how we adapt to
our relationships and behaviour. The language we use reflects our identity, experiences, and
way of seeing the world. It also helps us communicate, interact with others, and meet our
everyday needs. As the AFL1501 study guide explains, conservation of the self is
“preserving or maintaining who we are, how we are organised and how we adapt to our
relationships and patterns of behaviour. Whenever we use language, we therefore reflect who
we are in terms of our own frames of reference and blue prints” (AFL1501 Study Guide, Unit
1). Maturana and Varela (1987:248) reinforce this by stating that “… every human act takes
place in language.” Language is therefore not merely a tool; it is the medium through which
identity is continuously conserved, adapted, and performed.

I grew up in a multilingual South African household in Gauteng. My home language is
isiZulu, which I spoke daily with my parents and grandparents. At primary school the
medium of instruction was English, while many classmates spoke Sepedi, Sesotho, or
Afrikaans on the playground. Later, when I moved into a more diverse high-school and
workplace environment, I added functional Sesotho and some Afrikaans to the mix. Today I
move fluidly between isiZulu at home, English at university and work, and Sesotho or
Afrikaans with friends and colleagues. This linguistic repertoire is my language background
and the living environment that continues to shape me.

South African Languages and Personal Identity

The South African languages I know best are isiZulu, English, and to a lesser extent Sesotho
