Part A: Reflection on My Ecological Footprint

My ecological footprint has made me reflect more critically on my relationship with

nature and the consequences of my everyday choices. Before completing this

assessment, it was easy for me to think about environmental problems mainly as issues

caused by governments, large corporations and industrial activities. However, the

concept of an ecological footprint challenged this assumption by showing that

environmental pressure is also connected to individual patterns of consumption. The

SUS1501 Study Guide presents sustainability as being concerned with the long-term

continuation of life and with humanity's ability to support life into the distant future

(University of South Africa, 2021). My ecological footprint therefore made me realise

that my lifestyle is not separate from wider environmental problems, because the

resources I consume ultimately come from ecological systems that have limits.

The result was uncomfortable because it forced me to consider the gap that can exist

between what I believe and how I actually live. It is relatively easy to say that

environmental protection is important, but the ecological footprint asks me to consider

whether my everyday choices reflect that belief. My consumption of energy, food, goods,

transport and other resources contributes, even if indirectly, to the demand placed on

the Earth's ecosystems. Daily (1997) argues that human societies depend fundamentally

on ecological systems and the resources and services that those systems provide. This

means that environmental degradation cannot simply be treated as a distant problem

because human wellbeing itself depends on functioning ecosystems.
