Using Learning Theories and Frameworks for Teaching in ODeL

Introduction

Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) has become an important approach to higher
education because it allows students to study without being required to attend a
traditional classroom on a regular basis. Unlike conventional face-to-face education,
ODeL separates teaching and learning from a particular physical location and often
allows learners to engage with their studies at times that suit their individual
circumstances. Learning can take place through digital platforms, electronic study guides,
recorded lectures, online discussions, virtual tutorials and electronic assessment
activities. This flexibility is particularly valuable for students who have employment
responsibilities, family commitments, live far from their institutions or experience other
circumstances that make regular attendance difficult (Moore & Kearsley, 2012).

Although technology makes ODeL possible, technology alone does not determine
whether students will learn effectively. The design of the learning experience is equally
important. Lecturers have to consider how students understand new information,
develop knowledge, practise skills and interact with others. Learning theories provide
useful perspectives for making these decisions because they explain learning from
different viewpoints and can guide the selection of appropriate teaching methods and
activities (Schunk, 2020).

Each learning theory places emphasis on a different aspect of the learning process.
Behaviourism is concerned with observable behaviour, repetition and reinforcement,

, whereas cognitivism focuses on processes such as memory, attention, understanding
and the organisation of information. Constructivism views learners as active participants
who develop meaning through experience and interaction, while connectivism places
greater emphasis on digital networks, information and the ability to establish
connections between different sources of knowledge (Siemens, 2005). These
perspectives can all have a place in ODeL, although their usefulness depends on the
learning outcomes and the type of knowledge or skills students are expected to develop.

Learning theories are complemented by instructional frameworks that help lecturers
organise and manage the teaching process. Frameworks such as the Community of
Inquiry, ADDIE, Transactional Distance Theory and blended learning provide guidance on
areas including course planning, interaction, communication, learner independence and
the integration of different teaching methods (Garrison, Anderson & Archer, 2000;
Branch, 2009).

This discussion explores four learning theories and four instructional frameworks that
are relevant to ODeL. Their application, advantages and limitations are examined,
followed by practical examples involving an undergraduate business studies course and
a postgraduate research methods module. The discussion argues that effective ODeL
should not depend on one theory or framework alone. Instead, lecturers should select
and combine approaches according to the needs of their students, the nature of the
subject, the learning outcomes and the circumstances in which teaching takes place.

Theoretical Foundations of ODeL: Learning Theories

Behaviourism

Behaviourism understands learning primarily as a change in behaviour that can be
observed and measured. From this perspective, behaviour is influenced by
environmental conditions, while particular responses can become stronger when they
