Using Learning Theories and Frameworks for Teaching in ODeL

Introduction

Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) has changed the way teaching and learning are
understood within higher education. Unlike conventional face-to-face education, ODeL does
not depend primarily on learners and lecturers being physically present in the same
classroom at the same time. Instead, learning can take place across different locations and, in
many cases, at different times through the use of digital technologies, learning management
systems, online resources, recorded lectures, discussion forums, electronic assessments and
other forms of mediated communication. This creates opportunities for students who may
otherwise experience difficulties accessing traditional higher education because of
employment, geographical distance, family responsibilities or other circumstances (Moore &
Kearsley, 2012).

However, providing learning materials online does not automatically result in effective
ODeL. The quality of an ODeL experience depends greatly on how learning is understood
and how teaching activities are designed. Learning theories provide educators with
explanations of how students acquire knowledge, develop skills, process information and
construct meaning. These theories therefore provide an important foundation for decisions
about teaching strategies, assessment, interaction and the use of technology (Schunk, 2020).
Different theories emphasise different aspects of learning. Behaviourism, for example,
focuses strongly on observable behaviour and reinforcement, while cognitivism is concerned
with mental processes such as memory and information processing. Constructivism places
greater emphasis on learners actively constructing knowledge, whereas connectivism
highlights learning through networks, digital connections and access to changing information
(Siemens, 2005).

, Learning theories should also be connected to practical instructional frameworks.
Frameworks such as the Community of Inquiry (CoI), ADDIE, Transactional Distance
Theory and blended learning provide educators with ways of translating theoretical principles
into actual teaching practice. These frameworks are particularly relevant to ODeL because
they address issues such as learner interaction, instructional design, communication,
flexibility and the organisation of learning experiences (Garrison, Anderson & Archer, 2000;
Branch, 2009).

This discussion examines major learning theories and instructional frameworks relevant to
ODeL and considers how they can contribute to effective teaching. It also compares their
strengths and limitations and applies them to two teaching scenarios. The discussion argues
that no single theory or framework is sufficient for every ODeL context. Effective teaching
requires educators to select and combine theoretical perspectives according to the learning
outcomes, characteristics of learners, subject matter and technological environment.

Theoretical Foundations of ODeL: Learning Theories

Behaviourism

Behaviourism explains learning primarily in terms of observable changes in behaviour
resulting from interactions between learners and their environment. The theory is strongly
associated with scholars such as B. F. Skinner, who argued that behaviour can be shaped
through reinforcement and appropriate environmental conditions (Skinner, 1953). From a
behaviourist perspective, learning occurs when a learner responds to a stimulus and the
consequences of that response influence whether the behaviour is repeated.

Behaviourism has an important place in ODeL because digital environments can provide
immediate feedback, repetition and opportunities for learners to practise particular skills. For
example, an online learning platform can provide students with multiple-choice questions
and immediately indicate whether their answers are correct. Students can then repeat the
activity until they demonstrate the required level of competence. In this situation, the
learning environment provides a stimulus, the learner produces a response and feedback
reinforces or corrects the response.
