, 1. INTRODUCTION

Gender-based violence (GBV) is a big problem in South Africa. It affects many people and
is a serious human rights problem. Even though South Africa has laws and many
programmes to fight GBV, it still happens in many communities. The assessment looks at
different government and non-government programmes that try to prevent and deal with
GBV in South Africa. it looks at the 16 Days of Activism campaign. It explains where the
campaign came from, what it wants to achieve, and its strengths and weaknesses.

One weakness is that many campaigns focus mostly on cities and do not reach enough
people in rural areas. Some ways of helping these campaigns reach rural communities are
also discussed. The discussion also looks at People Opposing Women Abuse (POWA).
POWA has become well known for its work against violence towards women. The reasons
for POWA's success are explained, together with lessons that other programmes can learn
from its work. Next, a GBV intervention is chosen for the 365 Day National Action Plan.
The goals of a marketing programme for the intervention are explained, and two poster
designs are presented. My discussion looks at some problems that may happen when
evaluating the intervention. For example, it may be difficult to know whether the
programme is really changing people's behaviour and attitudes.
