STRATEGIC WAREHOUSING AND FACILITY NETWORK DECISIONS FOR UHL

INTRODUCTION

Strategic warehousing is an important component of logistics and supply chain management
because it enables an organisation to store, manage and distribute products efficiently while
balancing service requirements and operating costs. Warehouses are no longer viewed simply
as buildings where goods are kept until they are needed. Instead, they form an important part
of the overall supply chain by supporting inventory management, order fulfilment,
transportation, customer service and the coordination of supply and demand. For UHL,
effective warehousing is therefore essential because the organisation must ensure that
products are available in the right quantities, at the right locations and at the right time while
keeping logistics costs under control. A well-designed warehousing strategy can improve
operational efficiency, reduce unnecessary transportation and inventory costs, and increase
the organisation’s ability to respond to customers (Christopher, 2016).

Strategic warehousing decisions should be aligned with UHL’s broader supply chain
objectives. Decisions concerning the location, ownership, design, size and layout of
warehouses can have long-term financial and operational consequences. Poor decisions may
result in excessive transportation distances, high inventory holding costs, inefficient handling
and inadequate customer service. In contrast, a strategically planned warehouse network can
create economies of scale, improve product availability and provide greater flexibility when
demand changes (Rushton, Croucher and Baker, 2022). UHL should therefore consider both
economic and service-related benefits when developing its warehousing strategy. The
organisation must also evaluate transportation and inventory cost trade-offs to identify a
facility network that achieves the lowest possible total logistics cost without compromising
customer service.
