UNISA SOC3704 Group Dynamics Study Guide – Theoretical Perspectives & African Contexts A concise, student-created study guide covering key concepts and theoretical perspectives in SOC3704 Group Dynamics, with particular attention to African contexts. Topics include the definition and nature of groups, symbolic interactionism, structural functionalism, social identity theory, Tuckman’s model of group development, the importance of studying group dynamics, Western-centric theories and their limitations, African perspectives, ubuntu, decolonisation and theoretical pluralism. The guide explores how group dynamics can be understood through both sociological and social-psychological perspectives, including issues of identity, power, conformity, leadership, communalism and cultural context. It also examines the relationship between Western theoretical frameworks and African perspectives, including interconnectedness, spirituality, indigenous knowledge, ubuntu and the need for culturally relevant approaches. Includes revision prompts covering the major concepts and comparisons discussed in the guide. Important: This is an independent student-created educational resource. Title of Assignment: Critically Exploring Group Dynamics: Theoretical Perspectives

and African Contexts

Group Dynamics in Context: A Critical Reflection from an African Lens

a) What Is a “Group”? Theoretical Perspectives and Lived Realities
At its simplest, a group is a collection of individuals. But in practice, a group is a living

system—a space where identity, power, and belonging are constantly negotiated.

Sociologists and psychologists have long tried to define what makes a group more

than just people in proximity. But can theory ever fully capture the emotional and

cultural depth of group life?

Symbolic interactionism, for example, suggests that groups are formed through shared

symbols and ongoing interaction (Mead, 1934). This resonates with how we build

meaning in everyday life —through language, gestures, and rituals. In rural

communities, a gr oup might form around a shared story, a funeral, or a communal

harvest. These are not just social events—they are identity-shaping moments.
