SECTION A
Question 1
1.1 Explain in one paragraph what multimodal communication means.
Multimodal communication, as defined in the ENC1501 study guide, is a comprehensive form of
conveying ideas that moves beyond simple verbal language (ENC1501, Study Guide, p. 31). It
involves integrating different styles, forms, and physical actions to communicate effectively with an
audience (ENC1501, Study Guide, p. 31).
This process begins by creating a setting for the ideas through description, then progresses to acting
out the concepts using drama and body language to create visual images, and finally utilizes facial
expressions and voice to express associated emotions (ENC1501, Study Guide, p. 31). Essentially, it
is a layered system where speaking, acting, and physical representation work together to bring
abstract ideas to life, making them more accessible and engaging for listeners (ENC1501, Study
Guide, p. 31).
Question 2
2.1. Discuss the main differences between literal meaning and figurative meaning. Support your
discussion with two examples for each.
The main difference between literal meaning and figurative meaning lies in their level of directness
and abstraction. Literal meaning, also referred to as denotation, is the physical, concrete, and direct
meaning of a word as it is found in a dictionary (ENC1501, Study Guide, p. 43). It represents the
most basic and straightforward interpretation of a word without any additional layers of association
or emotion. In contrast, figurative meaning, often called connotation, is the abstract, implied, or
associated meaning that goes far deeper than the literal definition (ENC1501, Study Guide, p. 43).
Figurative meaning can carry many more layers of interpretation and is frequently used to express
emotions, abstract concepts, or to create a more vivid picture in the mind of the reader or listener
(ENC1501, Study Guide, p. 43).
To illustrate this difference, consider the literal example where we say that the sky is blue, using the
word 'blue' to directly and physically describe the colour of the sky that we can see (ENC1501, Study
Guide, p. 43). A figurative example would be the statement that we feel blue, where the word is used
to express an abstract feeling of sadness or unhappiness, which has no physical or concrete form
(ENC1501, Study Guide, p. 43). Expanding on this, the word 'kill' is a very powerful and literal word
that refers to the ultimate physical power people have over others (ENC1501, Study Guide, p. 44).
However, a word like 'chain' can be used literally to describe a physical object made of connected
rings, but figuratively it takes on a much more significant meaning, referring to people not being free
and instead being controlled by others and left feeling powerless (ENC1501, Study Guide, p. 44).
