,MNM3703 ASSIGNMENT 1 SEMESTER 2 2026

DUE DATE: 24 AUGUST 2026

INTRODUCTION

Sales management is a critical organisational function concerned with planning, organising,
directing and controlling sales activities in order to achieve sustainable customer
relationships and organisational objectives. Effective sales management extends beyond the
direct selling of products and services and encompasses the design of appropriate sales
structures, forecasting future demand, managing salespeople's time, applying effective
personal selling techniques and recruiting individuals who can contribute to long-term
organisational performance (Johnston and Marshall, 2016). In increasingly competitive and
dynamic markets, organisations must ensure that their sales structures and practices are
sufficiently flexible to respond to changing customer expectations while maintaining
efficiency and profitability. This is particularly important for technology and Internet service
providers, where complex offerings require knowledgeable salespeople who can understand
customer requirements and communicate value effectively (Ingram et al., 2020).

The DataPathway case provides an opportunity to apply established sales management
principles to a business operating in a competitive and rapidly changing environment. The
organisation's challenges include determining an appropriate sales department structure,
forecasting future sales, managing fluctuating call volumes, communicating a complex and
intangible offering to potential reseller clients, identifying appropriate decision-makers and
developing an effective sales workforce. Addressing these challenges requires the integration
of theoretical principles with practical sales management decisions. The discussion therefore
examines sales department specialisation, quantitative and qualitative sales forecasting, time
management, personal selling approaches and closing techniques, as well as recruitment
strategies that support DataPathway's emphasis on cultural fit, potential and long-term
employee development. These areas collectively demonstrate how effective sales
management can contribute to customer satisfaction, sales performance and sustainable
organisational growth (Jobber and Lancaster, 2019; Kotler and Armstrong, 2021).

, QUESTION 1

1.1 Four types of sales department specialisation

Sales department specialisation refers to the manner in which an organisation structures its
sales activities by grouping salespeople according to particular characteristics of the market,
customers, products or geographical areas. The four basic forms of sales department
specialisation are geographical specialisation, product specialisation, customer/market
specialisation, and functional specialisation. Each structure enables an organisation to
allocate sales responsibilities in a manner that supports efficiency, customer service and the
organisation's overall marketing strategy (Kotler and Keller, 2016).

Geographical specialisation involves dividing the sales force according to specific
geographic territories. Each salesperson or sales team becomes responsible for customers
within an allocated geographical area. This structure is particularly appropriate where
customer needs, market conditions and distribution requirements differ between regions. A
relevant South African example is Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA), which
operates across different regions of the country and can organise sales and distribution
activities according to geographical territories. Sales representatives responsible for
KwaZulu-Natal, for example, can develop knowledge of local retailers, distributors and
market conditions that may differ from those encountered in Gauteng or the Western Cape.
Geographical specialisation therefore reduces duplication of effort while allowing
salespeople to develop strong relationships within their assigned territories (Jobber and
Lancaster, 2019).

Product specialisation structures the sales force according to the products or product
categories being sold. Salespeople become specialists in particular products and are therefore
expected to possess detailed knowledge of their products' technical characteristics, benefits,
applications and competitive advantages (Johnston and Marshall, 2016). A South African
example is Nedbank, where specialised sales teams may focus on particular financial product
categories, such as business banking, home loans, vehicle finance or investment products.
