, UNISA | BPT1501 The Teacher as a Professional: Analysis

Question 1: Mind Map of Challenges, Impact on Professionalism, and Solutions

The scenario depicts a township school in which structural neglect, inadequate teacher
preparation, and a weak accountability culture combine to erode the standards of conduct ex-
pected of a professional teacher under the South African Council for Educators (SACE) Code
of Professional Ethics (South African Council for Educators, 2000). Five challenges are drawn
from the scenario below, together with their impact on teachers’ professionalism and a corre-
sponding solution for each. The mind map that follows presents these branches visually, with
a distinct colour used for the impact node (orange) and the solution node (green) attached to
every challenge (blue).

1.1 The Five Challenges Identified

Challenge 1: Inadequate pedagogical training. The life science teacher’s incorrect claim that
oxygen is inhaled through one lung and carbon dioxide exhaled through the other reveals
a gap between subject knowledge and classroom delivery. Impact: this weakens the peda-
gogical competence that SACE Principle 2 requires a professional teacher to maintain, and
it damages learners’ trust in the accuracy of what they are taught, even where the teacher’s
personal dedication is not in question. Solution: a structured induction and mentorship pro-
gramme, paired with subject-specific in-service training and continuing professional teacher
development (CPTD) points administered through SACE, would close the gap between good-
will and competence.

Challenge 2: Weak staff accountability and absenteeism. Five experienced teachers re-
mained on the bus eating and chatting while a single trainee ran an entire school outing, and
the school holds no daily staff meetings to plan for absent colleagues. Impact: this contra-
venes the duty of care and collegial responsibility set out in the SACE Code, models poor
work ethic to learners and junior staff, and leaves classrooms unsupervised and disorderly
for large parts of the day. Solution: reinstating functional daily staff meetings, together with
a performance management system in which incentives are tied to verifiable, moderated
evidence of teaching rather than to easily manipulated indicators, would restore collective
accountability.

Challenge 3: Overcrowded, poorly managed classrooms. Class sizes exceed forty learners,
discipline is poor, and the teacher had to improvise several techniques simply to hold the
class’s attention. Impact: the teacher’s professional role is reduced to crowd control rather
