QUESTION 1

The Process Approach to Writing, ZPD and Scaffolding: A Focus on the Narrative Essay

The narrative essay, in which learners recount a personal experience or craft a fictional story, is an
appropriate and engaging writing task for a Grade 8 or 9 First Additional Language (FAL) classroom.
The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) endorses a combination of text-based and
process approaches to teaching extended writing (Department of Basic Education, 2011). When
applied to narrative writing, the process approach, particularly the drafting and revising stages,
offers a powerful framework for supporting learners' movement through Vygotsky's Zone of
Proximal Development (ZPD).

The ZPD, Scaffolding and Mediation

Vygotsky (1978) defined the ZPD as the distance between what a learner can achieve
independently and what they can accomplish with guidance from a More Knowledgeable Other
(MKO), such as a teacher or capable peer. Scaffolding refers to the temporary, adjustable support
that an MKO provides to help a learner bridge this gap (Wood, Bruner & Ross, 1976). Crucially,
scaffolding is not a permanent aid but a dynamic, interactive process; as the learner's competence
increases, the supports are gradually withdrawn, promoting autonomy and self-regulation (van Lier,
1996).

Mediation is the mechanism through which scaffolding occurs. In a sociocultural framework,
learning is mediated through tools, signs, and, most importantly, social interaction (Lantolf &
Thorne, 2006). During drafting and revising, the MKO mediates learning by offering guided
assistance that enables learners to perform tasks they cannot yet complete alone. This mediation is
essential because writing, particularly in an additional language, is a cognitively demanding activity
requiring simultaneous attention to content, structure, vocabulary, and grammar (Myhill, 2009).
Through effective scaffolding, the cognitive load is reduced, allowing learners to focus on discrete
elements of the task and progressively internalise the skills needed for independent writing
(Hammond & Gibbons, 2005).
