QUESTION 1: EVALUATING YOUR OWN SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT
1.1 Provide a suitable map(s), showing your location, that is, village, town and/or suburb, AND
a brief description thereof. It must be a map of good quality, showing the area in which you
reside.
Durban, located within the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal province, is
situated on the east coast of South Africa. The city is characterised by a subtropical climate with high
annual rainfall, particularly during the summer months. The surrounding environment features a mix
of urban development, industrial zones, and natural ecosystems, including the uMngeni River system,
coastal beaches, and wetlands. The city serves as a major economic hub with a dense population, and
rapid urbanisation continues to place significant pressure on natural resources, particularly
freshwater systems (eThekwini Municipality, 2026a). The land use is diverse, comprising residential
suburbs, commercial and industrial areas, agricultural land, and conservation areas.
