, 1. INTRODUCTION
The Gift of the Givers Foundation is a well-known South African organisation that
provides help to people affected by disasters and emergencies. It provides food, water,
medical care and other forms of support to communities in need. Communication plays
an important role in helping the organisation organise its work, reach affected
communities and work with different groups.
The following five areas are examined to show how the organisation operates and how
communication supports its work. The four parts of the organisation are examined: its
purpose, structure, people and environment. The difference between using media and
having media as part of everyday organisational life is explained. Then the importance
of communication as the “lifeblood” of an organisation is discussed. The type of
organisation and its different audiences are identified. Last, the discussion considers
how the organisation’s communication reflects the social and development challenges
faced by South Africa and the wider African continent.
