Algebraic Expressions — The Real Number
System
All real numbers occupy a position on the number line. The real number system is structured as a hierarchy of sets, each one a subset of
the next. Understanding where every number fits in this hierarchy is the foundation for all of algebra.
Natural Numbers ℕ Whole Numbers ℕ₀ Integers ℤ
Counting numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, … 0, 1, 2, 3, … (includes zero) …, −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3, …
Rational Numbers ℚ Irrational Numbers ℚ'
Any number expressible as a/b where b ≠ 0 and a, b are Non-terminating, non-recurring decimals. Examples: √2, √5,
integers. Includes terminating and recurring decimals. π.
Two calculations do NOT produce real numbers: square roots of negative numbers, and division by zero.
