, INC4801 ASSIGNMENT 5 2026
DUE SEPTEMBER 2026
Introduction
Inclusive education in South Africa and across the African continent cannot be adequately
understood or implemented through purely Western frameworks. African philosophies,
particularly ubuntu, offer a rich, indigenous foundation that aligns closely with the goals of
inclusion: belonging, dignity, interdependence and the full participation of every learner.
The 2023 study by Kramer on ubuntu leadership in Western Cape schools illustrates how
principals who deliberately embody values of compassion, dignity and community create
stronger cultures of belonging, even while systemic constraints such as resource
shortages and staff burnout persist (Kramer, 2023).
My assignment responds to the three questions by focusing on the module study guide
(especially Learning Unit 3), key South African policy documents, and scholarly literature
on African philosophies. It defines and discusses the principles of ubuntu, critically
analyses their reflection in South African inclusive-education policies, and proposes
practical strategies for making these policies more relevant to African contexts.
