CHAPTER 1


PLOT

• Nick moves to New York and rents a house in West Egg.
• During a dinner with Tom and Daisy Buchanan, he meets Jordan Baker
and discovers Tom is having an affair and Daisy encourages him to start
courting.
• Nick leaves and Tom and Daisy confront him about an engagement rumor
(The real reason Nick came to West Egg)
• At night Nick sees Gatsby reaching for the Greenlight on Daisy's dock.
*NOTE: Nick is Gatsby's neighbor. They both live across the water from Daisy.


MAIN CHARACTER (NICK)
• Nick has 3 different roles.
• 1st person narrator > Unreliable > He is in the story
• Main character > Hypocritical, Subjective,Bias,Judgemental. He makes
himself look good.
• Commentator >Reserves judgment but judges Tom Buchanan
• He thinks he is decent from everyone.
• He is snobbish.
• He hasn’t broken the relationship with the girl he ran away from back at
home.
• Nick has voyeuristic behavior.
• He is unreliable because he hides the truth, he came to West Egg to run
away from the girl not for the bond.
