1.1 Critical Explanation of Three Core Teaching Beliefs
1. Learning is an Active Process of Construction.
I firmly believe that students are not passive recipients of information but active constructors of
their own knowledge, building new understanding upon their prior experiences and existing
cognitive frameworks (Piaget, 1970). This belief directly informs my practice by compelling me to
move beyond traditional lectures and instead design inquiry-based lessons, problem-solving
activities, and hands-on experiments that require students to engage directly with the material,
question assumptions, and build personal meaning. This approach ensures that learning is durable
and transferable, as students are not just memorizing facts but understanding the 'why' and 'how'
behind them, leading to deeper cognitive processing and a more robust knowledge structure

students as individuals and using formative assessment to tailor content, process, product, and
learning environment to meet them where they are. This reflective and responsive practice ensures
that all students, regardless of their starting point, have equitable access to meaningful learning
and are challenged appropriately, thereby fostering a sense of belonging, engagement, and
personal achievement in the classroom.

assessments and portfolios over rote memorisation tests, as these better capture a student's ability

chains and energy pyramids. Instead, I would set up a classroom terrarium and have students
observe, collect data, and formulate their own hypotheses about the relationships between the
organisms. They would then design a simple investigation to test their ideas, thereby constructing
their understanding of ecological principles through direct experience and inquiry. This decision to
use a hands-on investigation over a traditional lecture is a direct result of my constructivist belief
