, ORGANISATIONAL TEAM ANALYSIS AND INTERVENTION: A CASE STUDY OF
THE WATER SOLAR COMPANY, SOUTH AFRICA

1. INTRODUCTION

Work teams are an important feature of modern organisations because many
organisational tasks require employees with different skills to work together towards a
shared objective. Greenberg (2011) explains that organisations may organise work
around teams to coordinate employees and organisational resources more effectively.
Effective teamwork can therefore contribute to improved productivity, better problem-
solving and the achievement of organisational objectives. However, simply placing
employees in a group does not automatically create an effective team. Teams require
clear goals, appropriate roles, communication, coordination and constructive
relationships between members (Kozlowski & Ilgen, 2006).

The organisation selected for this sample analysis is a South African water and solar
services company that provides solutions related to water treatment, pumping systems,
boreholes and solar energy. Its work often involves technical projects that require
employees with different areas of expertise to cooperate. A project may, for example,
require the coordination of management, technical personnel, installation specialists,
electricians, plumbers and support staff. These employees may form temporary project
teams to complete specific client projects. Unlike permanent departments, these project
teams are created to achieve particular operational objectives and may change
according to the requirements of each project.

The purpose of this assignment is to examine the challenges experienced by work
teams in the organisation and propose a re-establishment plan to improve their
effectiveness. The sample interview scenario indicates that the organisation has
existing temporary project teams but experiences challenges related to unclear
responsibilities, communication, coordination and interpersonal conflict. The assignment
therefore focuses on strengthening existing teams through a four-stage development
process involving team formation and role clarification, conflict management and
