QUESTION 1

1.1 Definition of a Research Paradigm (3 marks)

A research paradigm is a comprehensive worldview, philosophical framework, or belief
system that guides a researcher's thinking, assumptions, and practical choices during an
investigation (Kuhn, 1962; Creswell & Creswell, 2018). It acts as a lens through which the
researcher understands reality, defines what counts as valid knowledge, and determines how
data should be collected and analyzed (Babbie, 2021).

1.2 Five Aspects of Research Influenced by a Paradigm (5 marks)

The chosen research paradigm directly shapes and directs every phase of an investigation.
First, it dictates the formulation of the research question by determining whether the inquiry
focuses on measuring causal relationships quantitatively or exploring lived experiences
qualitatively (Creswell & Poth, 2018). Second, it guides the selection of the overall research
design and methodology, such as choosing between experimental frameworks or qualitative
case studies (Saunders, Lewis, & Thornhill, 2019). Third, it determines the choice of data
collection methods, driving the selection between standardized measuring tools and in-depth
qualitative interviews (Denzin & Lincoln, 2018). Fourth, it shapes the explicit role and
positionality of the researcher as either a detached objective observer or an empathetic co-
constructor of knowledge (Lincoln, Lynham, & Guba, 2011). Fifth, it governs the approach
to data analysis and interpretation, directing whether data are processed through statistical
modeling or through inductive thematic analysis (Neuman, 2014).

1.3 The Four Pillars of a Research Paradigm (12 marks)

Every research paradigm rests on four foundational pillars that define its core philosophical
stance (Lincoln et al., 2011; Patel, 2015).

, Ontology represents the first pillar and is concerned with the nature of reality and existence,
addressing what can be known about the world (Creswell & Poth, 2018). It examines
whether reality exists independently of human thought as a single objective truth, or whether
multiple subjective realities exist that are socially constructed by individuals within specific
contexts (Denzin & Lincoln, 2018).

Epistemology forms the second pillar and addresses the theory of knowledge, examining how
knowledge is acquired and defining the relationship between the inquirer and the known
(Saunders et al., 2019). It determines whether valid knowledge is discovered through
objective, distant measurement or co-created through close interaction and shared
understanding between the researcher and participants (Babbie, 2021).

Axiology serves as the third pillar and focuses on the role of values, ethics, and personal
biases throughout the research process (Kivunja & Kuyini, 2017). It considers whether a
study can and should remain completely value-free and neutral, or whether human values are
inherently embedded in inquiry, requiring researchers to actively reflect on their own
positionality (Creswell & Creswell, 2018).

Methodology is the fourth pillar and describes the overarching strategy, logic, and systematic
procedures used to acquire knowledge about the world (Guba & Lincoln, 1994). It translates
ontological and epistemological assumptions into concrete practice by providing the
blueprint—such as quantitative experiments, qualitative ethnographies, or mixed designs—
and specifying the specific analytical tools used (Neuman, 2014).

1.4 Comparison of Positivism and Interpretivism (10 marks)
