DUE 17 JULY 2026
Question 1 (25 marks)
Critically discuss how you, as a teacher, integrate the functions of planning,
organising, leading, monitoring, and coordinating to create a cohesive classroom
management system, and what would be the potential impact on learner
behaviour and academic achievement if one of these functions is weak or missing.
Classroom management is one of the most important responsibilities of a teacher. It
involves creating a safe, organised, and supportive learning environment where all
learners can participate and achieve their full potential. Good classroom management
does not only focus on discipline but also on planning lessons, organising resources,
leading learners, monitoring their progress, and coordinating all classroom activities.
These management functions work together to create a classroom where teaching and
learning can take place successfully. If one of these functions is weak or missing, learner
behaviour and academic performance may be negatively affected. As a teacher, I believe
that integrating these management functions helps create a positive classroom
environment that promotes respect, responsibility, and academic success.
Planning is the first and most important management function because it provides
direction for teaching and learning. As a teacher, I begin by planning lessons according
to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). I identify the learning
outcomes, prepare suitable teaching strategies, select learning resources, and plan
assessment activities before entering the classroom. I also consider the different
learning needs of my learners so that every learner has an equal opportunity to
participate. Careful planning helps me manage classroom time effectively and reduces
unnecessary disruptions. When learners know what is expected of them, they are more
likely to remain focused and participate actively in learning activities. Van Deventer and
Kruger (2020) explain that effective planning enables teachers to use classroom time
efficiently and improve learner achievement.
The second management function is organising. Organising involves arranging
classroom resources, learning materials, seating arrangements, and daily activities to
support effective learning. As a teacher, I ensure that textbooks, worksheets, teaching
aids, and digital resources are available before the lesson begins. I organise learners into
pairs or groups when cooperative learning activities are required. I also establish
classroom rules and daily routines that guide learner behaviour. For example, learners
know where to submit homework, how to request permission to speak, and how to
, move around the classroom respectfully. A well-organised classroom reduces confusion
and allows more time for learning. According to Bush (2020), organising helps teachers
use available resources effectively and creates an environment where learning can take
place without unnecessary interruptions.
Leading is another important function of classroom management. Leadership involves
motivating learners, providing guidance, setting a good example, and creating positive
relationships. As a teacher, I lead by showing respect, fairness, honesty, and
professionalism in my daily interactions with learners. I encourage learners to ask
questions, participate in discussions, and support one another during learning activities.
I also recognise learners who demonstrate good behaviour and academic effort by
praising them or providing positive feedback. Good leadership builds trust between the
teacher and learners and encourages learners to take responsibility for their own
behaviour. Bush (2020) states that effective teacher leadership creates a positive
classroom climate where learners feel respected, motivated, and willing to learn.
Monitoring is essential because it allows me to check whether teaching and learning are
progressing as planned. During lessons, I observe learner participation, assess
understanding through questions and class activities, and provide immediate feedback
where necessary. I also monitor learner behaviour to ensure that classroom rules are
followed consistently. If learners experience difficulties, I provide additional support
before misunderstandings become bigger problems. Monitoring also includes assessing
learner progress through classwork, homework, tests, projects, and informal
observations. Continuous monitoring helps identify learners who need extra assistance
and enables me to adjust my teaching strategies. Van Deventer and Kruger (2020)
explain that continuous monitoring improves learner performance because teachers can
respond quickly to learning challenges.
The fifth management function is coordinating. Coordinating means ensuring that all
classroom activities, teaching strategies, resources, assessments, parents, and school
policies work together towards common educational goals. As a teacher, I coordinate
classroom activities by ensuring that lesson objectives, teaching methods, assessment
tasks, and learner support are connected. I also communicate with parents about learner
progress and behaviour whenever necessary. In addition, I work closely with colleagues,
school management, and support staff to ensure that learners receive the assistance
they need. For learners with learning barriers, I cooperate with parents and the School-
Based Support Team to develop appropriate intervention strategies. Effective
coordination ensures that every learner receives consistent support both inside and
outside the classroom. According to Botha (2018), coordination strengthens
collaboration among all stakeholders and improves the quality of teaching and learning.
