1.1 Identify four key barriers to learning and participation evident in the case
study. (4)
In Themba Lethu Primary School, four clear barriers to learning and participation are
evident. First, poverty and hunger affect learners who arrive at school without food,
making concentration difficult. Second, bullying creates fear and emotional stress,
reducing participation. Third, large class sizes limit teachers’ ability to support diverse
needs. Fourth, low parental involvement weakens collaboration between home and
school. Engelbrecht and Muthukrishna (2024) explain that poverty and exclusion often
lead to behavioural challenges, while Mhlolo and Ntoatsabone (2023) highlight that lack
of parental support reduces learner achievement. These barriers show the need for
inclusive strategies to strengthen care and participation.
