ASSIGNMENT 3 2026
DUE 31 JULY 2026
QUESTION 1

1. The Introduction
The introduction is the first paragraph of an essay. Its primary purpose is twofold:

 To catch the reader's attention: The opening sentences should be engaging and make the
reader want to continue reading the essay. This can be achieved through a direct appeal, a
personal approach, a description of the overall effect, or by arousing curiosity (EST1501,
501.3/2021:105).

 To tell the reader what the essay will be about: The introduction must clearly state the main
idea and direction of the entire essay, often through a thesis statement. It provides a roadmap
for the reader, outlining the essay's focus and central argument (EST1501, 501.3/2021:105).

2. The Body
The body comprises the middle paragraphs of the essay. Its purpose is to develop and support
the ideas presented in the introduction (EST1501, 501.3/2021:107). The body is where the writer:

 Explains and discusses the main point(s): Each paragraph in the body should focus on a single,
specific idea that supports the overall thesis statement.

 Provides supporting evidence: Each body paragraph must contain a topic sentence and several
sentences that relate to it, providing factual details, explanations, examples, and evidence to
back up the claims being made (EST1501, 501.3/2021:107). This is how the writer moves from
making a point to proving it.

 Ensures unity and coherence: The body paragraphs should be logically connected using
transitional words and phrases to guide the reader through the argument smoothly (EST1501,
501.3/2021:107).
