Eerste Bedryf: Toneel 1 – Lukas verdwaal in die bos – (Lukas gets
lost in the forest) – Woudtoneel (forest scene). Boshuis links (“forest”
house to left). Elias is besig om van steier af te klim. (busy climbing off
scaffolding, possibly used so they can climb up on it and cut down trees)
Mis al baie dig oor hele toneel (thick mist covers entire scene)
Elias:
- ‘n Man het net een lyf (life) en dié moet lank uitkom (last long)
- Ek glo aan ‘n goeie plan (good plan) en ‘n beitjie geluk (luck)
- Barta bring vir my koffie ek is gedaan (bring me coffee I am tired)
- Hy kla dat die nat huis die kinders siek maak (complains that the
wet house is making the children sick)
Elias is lui (lazy) toe Barta met die koffie aankom (arrives with the coffee)
gryp hy die handbyl (he grabs the axe) en kyk hy aandagtig na die steel
(looks carefully at the handle)
Barta vra vir Elias of Lukas nie by hom is nie (asks Elias if Lukas is not
with him)…. Hy is nie (he is not)
Barta gaan weg… Elias dink… (Elias thinks)
- Barta is nog mooi (still beautiful)
- Maar sy sal moet skoene kry (she will need shoes)
- Hy dink om Krisjan Smal se oudste seun te vra om hom te kom
help (he thinks of asking Krisjan Smal’s oldest son to help him)
- Maar dan moet hy blyplek vir hom reel (but then he will have to
arrange a place for him to stay)
Al manier waarop ‘n man ‘n behoorlike ekstra in die Bos kan bekom is
on ‘n geweer te koop en olifante te skiet vir die tande. (only way a man
can make a bit of extra money in the forest is to buy a rifle and shoot
elephants for their tusks)…..
- Maar waar kry jy geld vir ‘n geweer (rifle) en koeëls (bullets)
- Hoe kom jy by die houtkopers verby (how do you get past the
wood buyers) tot by die skippe (to get to the ships)
Lukas is nie in die huis nie… (Lukas is not in the house)
- Elias vertel Willem om na tant Malie te gaan om te kyk of Lukas
daar is. (tells Willem to go to aunt Malie to check if Lukas is there)
,Lukas is nie by tant Malie nie (not with aunt Malie)
Willem gaan na tant Anna om te sien of hy daar is (goes to aunt Anna to
see if he is with her)
Elias besef dat hy nog lank moet sukkel voordat sy kinders groot genoeg
is om hom hom te help (realises that he is going to have to struggle for a
long time before his children are old enough to help him)

- Nina (still a baby)
Barta – Ek was by Sofie, hy is nie daar nie (he is not at Sofie’s)
Elias sê vir almal dat die kind nie weg is nie (the child is not missing) …
Loop, kyk weer in julle huise… (go and look again in your houses)
Tant Malie, tant Gertjie en Sofie gaan roep na Lukas vanuit verskeie
hoeke (go calling for Lucas in different directions)
Elias – Barta - Ek kan nie verstaan hoe jy die kind onder jou oë kon laat
wegraak nie (Barta, I don’t know how you could let the child disappear
form under your eyes)
Barta – Ek het met die vuur gesukkel (I was struggling with the fire)
Tant Gertjie – ‘n Kind is soos ‘n skilpad, jy dink nog hy’s stadig, dan is hy
weg (a child is like a tortoise you think he is slow and then he’s gone)
Daar word besluit dat tant Anna die manne moet roep om te help soek (it
is decided that aunt Anna must go and call the men to help look)
- Sy ken die voetpaaie (she knows the foot paths)
- Sy weet wat om te doen as die grootvoete langs die pad is (she
knows what to do if there are elephants on the side of the road)
Elias – Grootvoete trap nie op kinders nie (elephants don’t trample
children) …. They are smart, they don’t see children as a threat…
, Martiens, Dawid, Koos en Elias gaan soek vir Lukas
- Martiens - loop suid (south) / Dawid – loop wes (west)
- Koos - loop Noord (north) / Elias – loop oos (east)
- Hulle roep na elke honderd tree (they call after every 100 yards)
- Op die tiende roep draai hulle om (after 10 calls they turn round)
- Hulle kom terug na die begin punt (they come back to the start)
- Dan swaai hulle die rigtings so vyftig tree om en begin weer (they
then change direction by 50 yards and start again)
Tant Gertjie – Wat van die grootvoete? (what about the elephants)
Dawid – Die naastes is in Goena se Bos. Ons kan met gerustheid
soek (the closest are in Goena’s forest we can look with peace of
mind)
Almal gaan soek, doof daglig stadig op. Een na die ander kom hulle
terug (everyone goes to look, dull daylight approaches, one after
another they all come back)
Stem Op ‘n Band – (voice on a tape)… Op die agtste dag is Lukas
steeds nie gevind nie (eight days later, Lukas has still not been found)
Konstabel – Ek is bevrees dat julle moet aanvaar dat die kind teen dié
tyd nie meer kan leef nie (I am afraid that you need to accept that at
this stage the child can no longer be alive)

- Staan gestut tussen Sofie en Malie (stands supported between)
- Verouder en verslae (aged and defeated)
- Opgehuil en in lanfer geklee (she has no more tears left and is
wearing black mourning clothes)

that they found a skeleton of a small child next to the Gouna river)
- Dit kon ook ‘n bobbejaan s’n gewees het (it could also have been
the skeleton of a monkey)

years later in the Lange Kloof) – Die toneel begin in Die Lange Kloof
(scene begins in the Lange Kloof). Buite (outside) voor Fiela se huis (in
front of Fiela’s house). Die kinders jaag die volstruis kamp toe (the
children chase an ostrich towards the camp)
Selling – Sien ‘n perdekar en sê dat dit al heelweek op en af in the Kloof
is (sees a horse & cart, says that it’s been in the Kloof for the last week)
Fiela – Sê dat dit smouse is (she says that they are hawkers). As hulle
velle will koop se ons deel met Rossinski (if they want to buy skins tell
them we deal with Rossinski)
Selling – Daar’s taamlik dasvelle wat klaar gebrei is (there are at least
“dassie-skins” that have been knitted)
Fiela – Goed, hulle kan dasvelle kry, maar nie vir onder die twee oulap
‘n vel nie (they can have the dassie skins but for not less than two
“oulap” per skin – “oulap” is a type of currency)
Fiela vertel die leesers van die verskillende klimatiese en weers
omstandighede by Lange Kloof (she tells the readers about the different
climatic and weather conditions the exist in the Lange Kloof)
