Part 1 - An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
✔ Use the 'Evaluating coursebook material' checklist from Unit 10 to write a general evaluation of
the book based on the unit provided. The checklist is also on the assignment instructions page.
✔ Comment on any four items from the checklist. This must be presented as a coherent essay, not
just a list.
✔ Then say, based on the unit provided, whether you personally would like to use the book with
an advanced (C1) class and why or why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a
wrong response to this part.
✔ You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
✔ Write 300 - 500 words.
Evaluation of the Cutting Edge Coursebook
The book is a helpful guide - clear, approachable and easy to follow. It breaks essential skills down
into manageable steps and builds on them sensibly, so students can gain confidence as they go.
The colourful, well-designed pages make it pleasant to read and keep the reader’s attention.
Headings are appropriate and briefly summarising each section’s purpose. For example, paragraph
6a 1.1 — “Listen to six people talking about globalisation and make notes on the questions below”
— is straightforward and student-friendly: it tells learners exactly what to do and how to do the
activity. Altogether, the book combines practical guidance, clear structure and visual appeal in a
way that feels useful and encouraging.
The book thoroughly covers the four core language skills—reading, listening, writing, and
speaking—alongside focused vocabulary work and a grammar review of continuous verb forms.
Students were asked questions about different verb tenses to check their understanding. Overall,
the material is well graded for C1 learners and targets the skills appropriate for that CEFR level.
Students were assigned tasks on page 12 to work in pairs or small groups to compile lists of tips for
more advanced language learners. Overall, learners completed a variety of activities, including
listening and reading, and remained actively engaged throughout the book with interesting tasks
and discussion questions. In paragraph 3a, students were asked to identify strengths and
weaknesses—a logical way to pinpoint the areas that need focused attention to improve their
English proficiency. Grammar reference pages were also provided for students.
The book’s topics are organized into colourful sections, and each image is clearly described.
Headings and subheadings make navigation easy. The material’s graphic design is professional, and
the texts are engaging. The tasks and exercises are relevant, focused, and align with the author’s
goals.

, The book provides clear, logical summaries and reviews a broad range of skills—vocabulary and
pronunciation, plus reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
It is useful for lesson planning and for helping students develop essential language skills, I will use
it as a resource for future lessons.
