Task A: Definition of Applied Sport Psychology
Applied sport psychology is the branch of psychology that focuses on applying
psychological theories, principles and evidence-based techniques to improve athletic
performance, enhance psychological wellbeing and promote positive participation in
sport and physical activity. It involves assisting athletes, coaches and other members of
the multidisciplinary sport support team to develop mental skills that improve
performance, cope with competitive pressure and maintain motivation throughout
training and competition (Weinberg & Gould, 2023). Applied sport psychologists also
help individuals manage challenges such as performance anxiety, confidence issues,
stress, injury rehabilitation and career transitions while promoting healthy psychological
functioning (Cotterill, 2024).
Rather than concentrating solely on elite performance, applied sport psychology aims to
optimise both performance and personal development by integrating psychological skills
into everyday sporting practice. Professionals in this field work collaboratively with
coaches, sports physicians, physiotherapists, nutritionists and biokineticists to ensure
that athletes receive holistic support that addresses both physical and psychological
needs (Birrer et al., 2022).
Sport psychology principles should ideally be applied in the following situations:
Enhancing athlete motivation during training and competition.
Improving concentration and attentional control.
Managing competitive anxiety and stress.
Building confidence and mental toughness.
Supporting psychological recovery following sports injuries.
Improving communication and teamwork.
Assisting athletes during career transitions and retirement.
