QUESTION 1

1.1 Analyse this cartoon and answer the questions that follow:

1.1.1 The kind of pedagogy practiced by the teacher in the cartoon is caring pedagogy (also
known as pedagogy of care).

In isiZulu: I-pedagogy yokunakekela.

(BTE2601 Study Guide, Learning Unit 2, p. 6; Gravett et al., pp. 23–30)

1.1.2 Two observable actions that show that the teacher practices the pedagogy identified in
1.1.1 are:

 The teacher kneels at the learner’s eye level and gently places a comforting hand on
the learner’s shoulder, demonstrating physical closeness and emotional support.
 The teacher displays a warm, concerned facial expression and attentive body language
while interacting with the visibly crying learner.

These actions clearly illustrate empathy, respect, and the building of trusting relationships
that are central to caring pedagogy.(BTE2601 Study Guide, p. 6; Gravett et al., pp. 23–30)

1.1.3 Two reasons why such a pedagogy can influence the learner’s emotional well-being are:

1. Caring pedagogy creates a safe and supportive classroom environment that reduces
anxiety, builds a strong sense of belonging, and enhances the learner’s self-esteem and
emotional security. (BTE2601 Study Guide, p. 6; Gravett et al., pp. 23–30)
